AU: Garden of Eden

This post regards an AU version of Asriel Dreemurr played specifically for [community profile] garden_of_eden.

Name: Asriel Dreemurr
Original Canon: Undertale
Age: 18
Sex: Male
Gender/Preferred Pronouns: Male, he/him
Race: Boss Monster, primarily goat characteristics
Orientation: Pansexual
Current Occupation: College student, Prince of All Monsters, future king

"A long time ago, a human fell into the RUINS. Injured by its fall, the human called out for help. ASRIEL, the king's son, heard the human's call. He brought the human back to the castle. Over time, ASRIEL and the human became like siblings. The King and Queen treated the human child as their own. The underground was full of hope.

Then... One day... The human became very ill. The sick human had only one request. To see the flowers from their village. But there was nothing we could do. The next day. The next day. ... The human died.

ASRIEL, wracked with grief, absorbed the human's SOUL. He transformed into a being with incredible power. With the human SOUL, ASRIEL crossed through the barrier. He carried the human's body into the sunset. Back to the village of the humans. ASRIEL reached the center of the village. There, he found a bed of golden flowers. He carried the human onto it.

Suddenly, screams rang out. The villagers saw ASRIEL holding the human's body. They thought that he had killed the child. The humans attacked him with everything they had. He was struck with blow after blow. ASRIEL had the power to destroy them all. But... ASRIEL did not fight back. Clutching the human... ASRIEL smiled, and walked away. Wounded, ASRIEL stumbled home. He entered the castle and collapsed. His dust spread across the garden.

The kingdom fell into despair. The king and queen had lost two children in one night. The humans had once again taken everything from us. The king decided it was time to end our suffering. Every human who falls down here must die. With enough souls, we can shatter the barrier forever.

It's not long now. King ASGORE will let us go. King ASGORE will give us hope. King ASGORE will save us all. You should be smiling, too. Aren't you excited? Aren't you happy? You're going to be free."

Needless to say, this is not the complete story in canon. Asriel and the Human (referred to by fandom as "Chara") were best friends, and they had a plan that would free all monsters. Since seven human souls were required to break the barrier sealing everyone Underground, Chara decided to try giving Asriel their soul so the two of them can fuse and cross the barrier, take six more souls, and come back to save everyone. Unfortunately, giving up their soul requires death, and that method involved suicide via buttercup poisoning. Despite having mutual control over their shared body, Asriel resisted Chara's efforts to "use our full power" and refused to kill anyone, resulting in both their deaths.

To make a long story short, the Royal Scientist Alphys unknowingly used a flower sprouted from Asriel's dust to perform an experiment on, injecting a substance called "DETERMINATION" in hopes of creating a vessel to get through the barrier without taking human lives. Asriel was brought back to life through that flower, but because he didn't have a soul, he was literally incapable of feeling love or compassion for anyone. In despair (and unable to bear a world without his best friend), he committed suicide, only to discover that the Determination injected inside him gave him SAVE/RESET/LOAD powers--the ability to control time. While originally using his powers for good, Asriel--now Flowey--was overcome by curiosity and boredom, and became corrupted and cruel as he made use of every timeline to kill and manipulate people as he pleased (until that eventually bored him too). He's the primary antagonist of Undertale, and is who the Player confronts at the beginning and end of every route.

In the True Pacifist route, Flowey is successfully able to absorb every soul in the Underground, becoming Asriel: The Absolute God of Hyperdeath in the process. But due to the souls he absorbed, he regained love and compassion, and due to Frisk's resistance, was able to realize the ramifications of what he's done and what he's become. As his true self, Asriel releases the souls and breaks the barrier, leading to everyone's freedom. Since he cannot maintain his form without a soul, Asriel warns Frisk that he would turn back into Flowey and would need to be left behind.

This version of Asriel is an AU--a possible future of what could happen to him post-True Pacifist. In a nutshell:

- Some time after the events of the game, Frisk decides to return Underground to retrieve Flowey. On top of refusing to leave him without a soul, Frisk feels Flowey is the only person who can understand what they've been through Underground regarding time-loops and resets. Eventually agreeing to be their companion as long as Frisk didn't reveal his identity to his parents, he joins Frisk to the surface.
- Because he and Frisk no longer have SAVE/RESET/LOAD powers, Flowey cannot reset himself. No longer stuck as a perpetual child, he starts to age with everyone else.
- Flowey was 15 years old (Underground time-loops notwithstanding) by the time Frisk is able to find a solution with Alphys and Sans and craft an artificial soul. Thus, Flowey transformed not into his old body but what Asriel would've looked like if he lived to be a teenager.
- Like when he first woke up as Flowey, Asriel was unable to feel his arms and legs due to relying on vines for most of his life. He had to undergo physical therapy in order to make use of them again... on top of that, he changed back right around the age his body would undergo puberty. Fun! With the help and support of friends and family, Asriel eventually regains full use of his limbs within a few years.
- Like Frisk in his world, he has just started college and picked one that would be closest to friends and family. Undecided as a major, though he is taking courses related to history and politics so he could represent monsters as their prince. Expresses interest in gardening like his father.
- Despite growing into a healthy adult, Asriel struggles with PTSD and a whole host of issues as a result of his traumatic childhood. He feels a LOT of guilt for his actions as Flowey and still has difficulty forgiving himself, and does his best to make up for it by being as kind and compassionate to everyone as possible--perhaps moreso than he was as a child.
- Chara does not get revived in this timeline, and he keeps his matching Heart Locket as a memento of them. Since it counts as a security item, Asriel does not get it back until he's fully comfortable with his nudity at the Garden of Eden.
- Asriel cannot turn into Flowey or Hyperdeath in the Garden of Eden.
- Unlike his parents, Asriel cannot use fire magic. He is, however, able to summon vines like Flowey can. That said, his power is limited and he can only use a few at a time, and will likely pass out after using them for too long duration of time.
